In memory – Bob Jordan

This is the first conference since the passing of one of BALEAP’s founders, Bob Jordan. The BALEAP 2017 conference is a time to remember and celebrate Bob’s life and his contribution to EAP.

Bob’s first encounter with English language teaching was in Finland with the British Council, but it was Nepal, where Bob was later posted, which remained a lifelong association. After studying in Edinburgh for a year and working for a period in Sierra Leone, Bob settled in Manchester, where he ran the English language department at the university until his retirement.

Bob was a co-founder of BALEAP’s predecessor, SELMOUS (Special English Language Materials for Overseas University Students) in 1972 and he became the organisation’s second chair (1973-74), returning to the chair between 1984 and 1985. He remained an honorary member all his life. Bob wrote two seminal  EAP texts, Academic Writing and EAP: a guide and resource book for teachers. Bob also wrote a number of EAP articles, including one in the first ever issue of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes.

Please read more about Bob in this wonderfully written piece from the Guardian.
